Leave it to Reed Morano to transform a bop of a pop song into the title of a haunting post-apocalyptic indie film. Starring a lean but heavy-hitting cast, “I Think We’re Alone Now” pits Elle Fanning against Peter Dinklage as an odd couple thrown together by a mysterious disaster that leaves them the last two people on earth. Although they don’t appear in the new trailer, Paul Giamatti and Charlotte Gainsbourg are the only other two actors billed on the film’s IMDb roster.
The official trailer opens with eerie score that would not be out of place on “The Handmaid’s Tale,” for which Morano directed the pilot episode. As Dinklage walks the empty streets in trepidation, he peers into abandoned cars full of dead bodies. The characters approach each other curiously, feeling the other out as they attempt to make sense of what has happened.
In shooting the film, Morano, who began her career as a cinematographer, has given it her striking visual trademark. Bright colors pop against sharp blue-grey backgrounds, and centered close-ups linger on pensive stares with soft backlighting. The film debuted at Sundance, where it picked up a special jury award for “excellence in filmmaking.”
