Threads Catches Up With Competitors, Lets Users Save Drafts and Take Photos In-App

In a move designed to improve the user experience and make Threads more competitive, Instagram's close-friends messaging app is rolling out two highly requested features: in-app draft saving and photo capture.

Instagram chief Adam Mosseri announced the update, highlighting its focus on making "sharing ideas on the fly" easier. This comes after a testing period with a limited group of users.

These additions position Threads as a more serious contender against X (formerly Twitter), which has long offered both draft saving and a camera shortcut. However, it's worth noting that Threads currently allows only one draft at a time, unlike X's ability to save multiple drafts.

Here's a breakdown of the new features:

  • Saving Drafts: Users can now start composing a message and simply swipe down to save it as a draft. This allows them to revisit and complete their thoughts later.
  • In-App Camera: A camera icon within the composer enables users to take photos directly within Threads. Captured photos can be shared immediately or retaken before posting. This eliminates the need to switch between the app and the device's camera app, streamlining the sharing process.

The launch of the in-app camera coincides with rumors suggesting X might be considering adopting Threads' carousel format for displaying images. Currently, X displays photos in a grid layout, but this might change in the future.

These updates are part of a series of improvements Threads has implemented since its launch in July 2023. Recent additions include bookmarking features, trending topics, and the ability to cross-post content from Facebook to Threads. By offering a more comprehensive feature set, Threads is aiming to solidify its position in the social media landscape.
